IYV+10 Provincial Sub-committees established
The IYV+10 Steering Committee organize organized a preparatory meeting for the launch of of IYV+10 Provincial Sub-committee with a special focusspecial focus on Volunteer activities taking place outside outside of the Western Province on 23 June 2011 June 2011 from 1.30pm to 5pm at the Aesthetic Resort, Colombo 7. The main objective of this meeting meeting was to prepare the ground for establishing the the IYV+10 Sub-committees in the provincial level. This event was graced by the presence of the MinisterMinister of Social Services, Hon. Felix Perera, Perera, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative a.i. Ms. Razina Bilgrami, IYV+10 National Steering Committee, Committee, provincial representatives, media and other stakeholders and other stakeholders.
“This initiative for provincial structures structures is highly recommended by the government government to fully engage all its stakeholders to their their maximum capacity” said the Minister of Social Services, Services, Hon. This meeting brought together approximately approximately 90 representatives from around the country where they enthusiastically engaged engaged in the formation of the Provincial Sub-committees.committees. “It is very interesting to see the establishme establishment of Provincial Sub-committees bringing a a diverse spectrum of stakeholders together together” added the United Nations Development Programme Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative a.i. Ms. Razina Bilgrami. “This will serve as a platform platform through which various volunteers who are already working on their respective projects, projects, will be more effectively networked, and and will come together to ensure that provincial volunteer volunteer activities are better coordinated” she adds.she adds.
Another discussion topic during the meeting was the various obstacles faced by the participants in their respective provincesprovinces and how to overcome those. Methods Methods and mechanisms of mobilizing volunteers volunteers in the local context and best practices too too were discussed.
The IYV+10 Provincial Sub-committeescommittees will act as supporting bodies and provide guidance guidance and coordination at provincial level level for IYV+10 volunteering activities in Sri Lanka. Lanka. The objectives of the Provincial Sub-committeescommittees are to assist in emphasizing, recognizing recognizing and celebrating the diversity of volunteerism volunteerism island-wide. Both the established National SteeringSteering Committee and the upcoming ProvincialProvincial Sub-committees are expected to pursue pursue their mandate beyond 2011 to strengthen strengthen further the volunteerism spirit and actions actions in the country.
